• Homelessness in Ottawa - A shelter worker's perspective - Lumix GH3

A video from the perspective of a front line shelter worker. I didn't give much thought on homelessness until I happened to photograph them by accident when I frequently crossed from Gatineau to Ottawa. on a daily basis. When I looked more closely at the pictures I took they spoke to me and had me think about the people dealing with homelessness. If there's something there that makes someone "pause for the cause" I'm good with it. Thanks to Kaila for taking part and being the fighter you are for social causes. Some may or may not like the video, but the intent is to draw attention and think about homelessness. Also mucho thanks to Chantal for your vocals once again on the music despite fighting colds on and off throughout this winter.

Robyn and Mickey are both 17 years-old and homeless in Ottawa, Canada. Once Mickey begins to talk, you can tell that these young adults have aged beyond their years. Robyn says that because shelters will not take dogs or allow them all to stay together, that they'd rather stay on the streets sleeping rough. On their first night homeless both of them were stressed and scared. They stayed under a bridge until someone gave them a tent and they now live in the woods. The Salvation Army outreach team took me there, and looked like their sleeping bags and everything they had was soaked from the rain. Clearly, this is no way for people to live. No way for 17 year-old's to live. Very special thanks to Ottawa Salvation Army and Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness. Distributed by One...

Using a small camera on a long poll to explore an underground bunker has been sealed off for 60 years. This is an update to a video I made 3 years ago. Since then the bunker is crumbling and the opening has been enlarged by unknown people. I expect that this will be demolished in a couple of years. This structure resembles a fall out shelter, or nuclear atomic bomb shelter, but it was used to store vegetables by the nearby missionary school run by the White Fathers in Vanier. We will return again for more urban exploration if the opening becomes large enough for us to fit through.

Aboriginal people come to Canada's urban cities for various reasons. Sadly, once here, it's often hard for them to find a way to survive. As Cassien told us in Yellowknife [http://bit.ly/H3uCGi], going back home can also be a problem. Annie and Matto have lived in a homeless shelter for over a year. They are on a housing list, but that often takes time. If we are ever going to end homelessness in Canada we must seriously focus on listening to our aboriginal neighbors. We encourage others to do the same, may this video inspire you to make a difference! After countless encounters with many lower class families and those who are unfortunate; relationships are the best solution. I believe the greatest poverty isn't financial issues, but being uncared, unloved and left alone; similar to Mother Teresa's quotes. Those who are unprivileged are still humans and regardless what happened in their passed, they still deserve another chance just like us when we make mistakes. Those who are influenced by drugs and alcohol are trying to forget their passed, one quoted "Life hurts". In the end, they have the right to be a human being. This community center/shelter will be a positive place for those under the influence of poverty to get their lives back together! This cause started on June 30th, 2014. Hopefully by June 30th, 2015, we can reach most of Ottawa-Gatineau. We need an army, and we need your support!
